A British court has found a Pakistani-born man guilty of child cruelty after he forced two teenaged boys to flog themselves with a bladed whip during Muharram.
Muharram is the first month of the Islamic calendar and is one of the four months of the year in which fighting is prohibited. The word is derived from the word ‘haram’ meaning forbidden.
In the first case of its kind to be brought before a British court, prosecutor Andrew Nutall reminded a Manchester Crown Court jury that children in Britain are protected by civil law from any harm caused by adults.
"In this country, children under the age of 16 will be protected under the law from harm. Beyond the age of 16 it is a matter for them, but a line has to be drawn in the sand and that line is 16. In this country, the laws are very different from those in Pakistan. If you want children to perform this act then take them to Pakistan."
The act of self-flagellation, held on the 10th day of the Muharram, is known as Zanjeer Zani and is practised by Shia Muslims all over the world.
Throughout the trial, Syed Mustafa Zaidi, a devout Shia who grew up in Pakistan, insisted that the act was part of the boys' religion and, therefore, not illegal.
But the jury convicted him of two counts of child cruelty after hearing from the boys, aged 13 and 15, how he goaded them to flagellate with bladed whips in spite of being cautioned by elders present at the ceremony.
The boys admitted that they had wanted to beat themselves, but not under duress and not using blades.
Zaidi now faces up to 10 years in jail.

Problem with Conservative Religion
Whether it is Christain fundamentalists that believe god wanted them to tie their son to a tree for two days ( he died!) for being naughty or Opus Dei fanatics who love self flaggellation or the Muslim and hindu conservatives they are ALL the same . This is religion with a SMALL GOD incompatible with a world that acknowledges Quantum mechnics and string theory. Education has to be the answer

Should be? but it is the muslims that do it best
Beat yourself, blow yourself up! Muslims seem to be fighting and killing everyone and especially each other look at afgahanistan, sumalia, Iraq, Pakistan to name just a few.. Christ teaches love, peace and excellance.. Christ showed the world that you can beat me, kick me, whip me, crucify me.. BUT YOU CAN NOT KILL ME.. Christ is a living prophet.

Check the crime section of the newYork times, Families killing each other, Shootings for a pair of shoes. Christians seem to be killing each other in thier own land? But to keep violence away from thier loved ones they go over sea’s where any colateral damage will be others families. Yes they blow themselves up for thier beliefs while we Bomb and kill at the push of a button, and if a few innocent women & children are in the area shucks best bomb them anyway as we would not trade American soldiers lives for innocent Iraq lives. TSK TSK “Jesus was just a guy!"
