It has been reported from Algeria that a court has acquitted two former detainees of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.

The men, who had been returned home by the US to face charges of ties to terrorism, denied in court that they had any connection to foreign terrorist groups.

While they said they had been involved in drug dealing, they would not accept US allegations of terrorist links.

Abdelli Faghoul and Terari Mohamed were released from Guantanamo and handed over to Algerian authorities on Aug 15th, 2008, after being held for seven years.

Police in Pakistan has arrested the men after they crossed the border during the US-led invasion.

The defendants told the Algerian court they had only gone to Afghanistan after living in Germany, where they were involved in the illegal drugs trade.

Prosecutors in Algeria had asked for a 20-year sentence against them.
