Eighth-seeded Diego Schwartzman fell while world No. 1 Novak Djokovic lost his cool en route to a victory Tuesday on a rainy day on the clay courts of the Internazionali BNL d'Italia in Rome.

Several matches were postponed, including the Daniil Medvedev-Aslan Karatsev showdown.

Schwartzman lost in straight sets to Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-3. Auger-Aliassime converted five of six break points to down the Argentine in 64 minutes.

"It was tricky conditions overall. A lot of rain, heavy conditions. I think maybe it suited me better. I think he was struggling to find openings on the court," Auger-Aliassime said. "I took advantage of that. I kept going for my shot with no hesitation, stuck to my game plan. I was able to do that well outside of the little bit of slump in the second."

It was Auger-Aliassime's first top 10 victory since 2019.

Djokovic defeated American Taylor Fritz 6-3, 7-6 (5) in a match delayed two hours by rain. Djokovic had strong words for the chair umpire for not halting the match sooner as Fritz knotted the second set at 5-5.

"How much more do you want to play?" Djokovic yelled at the umpire before walking off to shelter in the tunnel. The match eventually was suspended. Djokovic finished off Fritz after the delay.

"It was a very strange match with strange conditions. Obviously playing under the rain non-stop for almost two full sets, it is challenging for both me and him," Djokovic said. "I thought that I had an advantage there because the conditions were slower which allows me to return his serves, because he's got really big serves.

"I was stressed out in the end obviously, but I think it was the right call to stop the match," Djokovic said.

American Reilly Opelka defeated Italian wild card Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-4, and Japan's Kei Nishikori advanced when 11th-seeded Spaniard Pablo Carreno Busta (back) withdrew in other second-round matches.

In first-round action, No. 9 seed Matteo Berrettini of Italy rallied to defeat Georgia's Nikoloz Basilashvili 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 in just more than two hours.

Tenth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut of Spain defeated American qualifier Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-4.

Canadian Denis Shapovalov, the No. 13 seed, made quick work of Poland's Kamil Majchrzak 6-1, 6-3.

Italian Lorenzo Sonego upset No. 14 seed Gael Monfils of France 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.

Spanish qualifier Alejandro Davidovich Fokina upended No. 16 seed Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-4, 7-6 (2).

Australian John Millman defeated Dusan Lajovic of Serbia 6-3, 6-4.

Britain's Cameron Norrie downed Spaniard Roberto Carballes Baena 6-4, 6-4.
