HANOI -- Vietnam reported 11,692 new COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, including 11,687 locally transmitted and five imported, according to the country's Ministry of Health.

The new infections brought the country's total tally to 707,436, with 17,545 deaths, the ministry said. (Vietnam-COVID-19)

TOKYO -- The Japanese government decided on Tuesday to call an extraordinary Diet session on Oct. 4 to determine a new prime minister, ahead of a general election possibly to be held in November.

The presidential election of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) scheduled for Sept. 29 is expected to effectively decide the next premier succeeding the outgoing Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, who is to resign at the end of September, as the LDP controls the powerful lower house of parliament. BANGKOK -- Thailand's capital city Bangkok on Tuesday started to give Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines to children aged 12 to 18 with underlying illnesses.

The vaccination program targets the 12 to 18-year-olds with diseases such as cancer, chronic renal failure and chronic respiratory disease, according to a statement issued by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA). (Thailand-Children-Vaccination)

KABUL -- The newly-established caretaker government in Afghanistan has named remaining ministers and members, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Tuesday.

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand reported 14 new Delta cases on Tuesday as its largest city Auckland will relax restrictions from midnight by moving to COVID-19 Alert Level 3 for at least two weeks.

Tuesday's new COVID-19 infections, all recorded in Auckland and its suburb, brought the total number of confirmed cases in the country's community outbreak to 1,085, Director-General of Health Ashley Bloomfield told a press conference. (New Zealand-COVID-19)
