HANOI, June 23 (Xinhua) -- Torrential rains over the weekend in northern Vietnam have left two people dead and caused extensive property damage, Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority reported on Monday.

The fatalities were recorded in Bac Kan and Bac Giang provinces, while three others remain missing in Thai Nguyen and Lang Son provinces.

Heavy rainfall also inundated more than 2,600 hectares of crops across the region, said the report.

The authority has instructed local administrations of Thai Nguyen, Bac Ninh, Bac Giang provinces and the capital Hanoi to step up patrols and guard duties along the dike systems to promptly detect and respond to any incidents.

Natural disasters left 40 people dead and missing in Vietnam during the first five months of this year, according to the National Statistics Office.
